We help gladly, and we usually find something that works. But here is what we tell everyone who asks: this is the hardest way to furnish a room, and the reason is simpler than you'd think.
A rug comes in its colors, not in yours
Every rug design is produced in a limited set of colorways decided by the maker, five or six at best, and some designs in one color only. So if a pattern catches your eye, it may simply not exist in the shade that suits your sofa and curtains, and you end up compromising: a pattern you love in a color that fights the room, or the right color in a pattern you don't really want. Sofa and curtain fabrics, on the other hand, are nearly unlimited
Fabrics work the opposite way. Sofa upholstery comes in hundreds of colors and shades and is made to order. Curtain fabrics too: light chiffon sheers, blackout fabric for bedrooms, linen with its calm modern feel, and velvet when you want richness. Each of these comes in a wide range of tones, so matching fabric to an existing rug is easy. Matching a rug to existing fabric is the part that wears you out.
The order we've recommended since 1991
- First the rug: choose the pattern and size you truly love, with complete freedom, because it's the hardest piece to match and the most present in the room
- Second the sofa fabric: pick up one of the rug's own colors or a close shade, with hundreds of options in front of you
- Third the curtains: chiffon or linen in a quiet tone that agrees with the set, and blackout where you need darkness
- Accessories last: cushions and throws tie everything together
