Every rug leaves the factory with a small instruction label stitched to its back or attached to it. Most of these labels are thrown out with the box before anyone reads them. We gathered the essence of what the factories write on those labels, and added our experience since 1994 with the Eastern Province climate.
The sun is the worst enemy of color
The most repeated warning on factory labels: do not leave the rug under direct sunlight. Sun rays fade colors over time and can turn lighter shades yellowish. If your rug sits near a window with strong sun, soften the direct light with a sheer curtain, or turn the rug around from time to time so one side does not fade before the other.
The vacuum is its friend, beating is its enemy
Regular vacuuming is the best daily care a rug can get. As for beating the rug the way the older generation used to, the factories say plainly to avoid it: beating weakens the weave structure and deforms the pile. A calm weekly vacuum cleans deeper than a violent beating.
Spills: blot them dry, never rub
Something spilled on the rug? The instructions are clear: blot the liquid immediately with a dry towel and light pressure, and do not rub. Rubbing pushes the stain deep into the pile. Stay away entirely from chlorine, harsh detergents, and stiff brushes, which damage the fibers and can alter the color. For deep cleaning use a dedicated carpet cleaner or a neutral detergent, and for precious pieces the best answer is always professional dry cleaning.
Heavy furniture leaves its mark
Do not leave a heavy piece of furniture in the same spot on the rug for long months. Shift pieces slightly from time to time and vacuum where they stood, and rotate the rug itself every few months so foot traffic spreads across its whole surface instead of wearing one path before the rest.
Storing it right
If you store a rug for a season: roll it, never fold it, keep it somewhere dry and well ventilated, and never hang it on hooks. Humidity on our eastern coast is a real challenge, so avoid damp storerooms and annexes, and remember that the cotton backing on some rugs is affected by moisture more than others.
Small numbers that signal honesty
The factory labels themselves state that weights carry a tolerance of around 10%, and that sizes can vary up to 3% in some types with cotton backing. That is the nature of machine-made rugs everywhere in the world, which is why we state it transparently in our product specifications instead of hiding it. The seller who tells you this before the purchase will stand with you after it.
